Waiting periods are defined time frames in a major medical insurance policy in Mexico during which you cannot use the insurance for certain illnesses or treatments, even if the coverage has already been contracted.

The waiting period begins on the policy’s effective date and may vary depending on the type of treatment, illness, or additional coverage.

How long do they last and when do they apply?

Waiting periods vary by insurer, but commonly include:

  • 90 days: for minor illnesses like respiratory or digestive infections.

  • 1 year: for tonsil, gallbladder, nose, knee, spine, or hernia surgeries.

  • 2 years or more: for conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, cancer, or psychiatric treatments.

  • 10 months: for maternity coverage, if included in the policy.

Some insurers may allow you to shorten these periods by submitting a "certificado de antigüedad" (certificate of prior coverage) from another policy.

Practical example

Paola, 33, purchased her insurance in January. In May, she was diagnosed with an inguinal hernia.

Since the policy establishes a 1-year waiting period for hernias, the expenses weren’t covered, even though her policy was already in effect.

Conclusion: Knowing the waiting periods can help you avoid surprises and unexpected expenses.

Recommendations

  • Before purchasing, ask which conditions are subject to a waiting period and how long each one lasts.

  • If you’re switching from another insurer, provide a certificate of prior coverage to eliminate or reduce these periods.

  • Don’t delay getting insured: the sooner you purchase coverage, the sooner the waiting periods begin.

  • Carefully review the “Conditions with Waiting Period” section in the policy’s general terms and conditions.

  • Consult your insurer to confirm whether a condition will be covered if it appears during the waiting period.
