Major medical insurance policies in Mexico allow you to add coverage that protects you while abroad. These coverages can help if you suffer an illness, accident during a trip, or need medical treatment outside the country.
Types of international coverage
"Por emergencia en el extranjero" (Emergency coverage abroad)
Covers unexpected illnesses or accidents while you are temporarily outside of Mexico. It only applies if the event occurs during the trip and requires immediate attention.
"Cobertura internacional" (International coverage)
Covers medical treatments outside of Mexico (such as surgeries), as well as accidents and illnesses. It applies whether the event occurs inside or outside of the Mexican territory.
Practical Example
Silvia, 37, traveled to the United States and had appendicitis.
She was treated at a local hospital and paid $8,000 USD. Upon returning to Mexico, she submitted the invoice, medical summary, and supporting documents.
Her policy included emergency coverage abroad, and she was reimbursed $6,500 USD.
Without this coverage, she would have had to pay the full cost.
Common Exclusions
Pre-existing conditions.
Cosmetic or experimental treatments.
Events that occur outside Mexico without the corresponding international or emergency abroad coverage.
Travel, lodging, or companion expenses.
Recommendations
If you travel frequently, consider a policy that includes international or emergency abroad coverage, or a complementary travel insurance policy.
Carry your insurance ID card and emergency contact numbers with you.
Keep all receipts, invoices, and medical reports.
Check if prior authorization is required for scheduled treatments outside the country.
At Sáas, we have a team of consultants who can guide you through the process of contracting and using your policy.
